INSTRUMENT ERGONOMICS: PERFECT POSTURE FROM PLAY TO PERFORMANCE.

Appropriate biomechanics and ergonomics are key for injury prevention and management for any profession, especially for the Musician. Optimal ergonomics can be achieved with postural training, cross training, appropriate instrument selection, and/or adaptive equipment to meet an artist's individual needs.

 

ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT & INSTRUMENT MODIFICATION FOR THE STRING INSTRUMENTALIST

This is an interactive workshop: you are welcome to bring your string instruments if available. 

Appropriate biomechanics and ergonomics are key for injury prevention and management for any profession, especially for the instrumentalist. For the string instrumentalist there are many options & tools available for improved positioning for ease of play. optimal ergonomics can be achieved with appropriate instrument selection, prefabricated items, and/or custom creations to meet an artist's individual needs. Our goal is to provide educators, artists, & medical professionals with information and a hands on experience of string instrument adaptation options that are available.

This workshop includes:

  • Selecting an appropriate string instrument: education on anthropometry and available instrument options.

  • Posture assessment and available postural aids & supports to improve posture & reduce tension.

  • Functional hand positioning for play: prefabricated items available for string instruments.

  • Custom Fabrications: visual and physical examples of instrument adaptations.

Appropriate biomechanics and ergonomics are key for injury preventions and management for any profession, especially for the instrumentalist. For the wind instrumentalist there are many options & tools available for improved positioning for ease of play. Optimal ergonomics can be achieved with appropriate instrument selection, prefabricated items, and/or custom creations to meet an artist's individual needs. We would like to provide educators, artists, & medical professionals with a workshop to increase awareness of wind instrument modification options that are available.

This workshop includes:

  • Selecting an appropriate wind instrument: education on anthropometry and available instrument options.

  • Prefabricated items available for wind instruments: visual & physical examples of instrument supports/stands, harnesses

  • Custom items: visual and physical examples of key adaptations, orthosis; and demonstration of creating a custom hand/instrument orthosis.
